Some Good News: 90% of Kenya’s electricity generated from renewables in 2025

May 28, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Kenya is now getting nearly 90% of its electricity from renewable energy. That’s up from just 50% in 2000, making it one of Africa’s leaders in the clean energy transition. The country has invested heavily in geothermal, wind, solar, and hydropower, including Africa’s largest wind farm at Lake Turkana.

Dose of Awe: Tree bark “eats” climate pollution

May 28, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Scientists recently discovered that the microscopic organisms living in tree bark can actually help clean the air by “eating” climate-polluting gases like methane and hydrogen. It is estimated that a single square metre of bark can hold up to 6 trillion of these tiny, hungry microbial cells. Alongside the important role trees already play by …

Top 10 tips to water your garden during a drought

May 21, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Canada saw some drought relief over the winter, but moderate to severe drought is still present across much of the country.  And with forecasts calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures this spring and summer, dry conditions could quickly return in some regions. For gardeners, that means being more intentional about how and where you use water. So …

May 21, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Texas is on track for a major energy milestone. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, solar power is expected to generate more electricity than coal across most of the state’s grid for the first time in 2026. Solar generation in Texas is forecast to reach 78 billion kilowatt-hours next year, compared to 60 billion …

Dose of Awe: Elephant “allomothers”

May 21, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Elephant herds are matriarchal societies led by the oldest female and built around deeply connected family groups that can include more than 100 elephants. African elephant calves are born into these communities surrounded by mothers, sisters, aunts, and younger females who help care for them as they grow. These caregivers are known as “allomothers.” Their …

May 13, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

The U.S. is set to add a record 86 gigawatts of new power capacity in 2026. About 93% of it will come from renewables and battery storage. Solar is leading the way, with another record year expected and a 60% jump from 2025. At the same time, battery storage is scaling up fast, helping store …

Dose of Awe: The mighty blue whale

May 13, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

We know blue whales are big – but it’s hard to imagine how big. The blue whale is the largest animal in Earth’s history, even bigger than all known dinosaurs.  They reach lengths of about 110 feet, which is longer than a basketball court, and its heart weighs around 400 pounds. That’s roughly the weight …

Meet the Icemakers: The community builders at the heart of a changing winter

May 13, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

It’s hours before dawn in the dead of winter. The air is still, the neighbourhood quiet. Somewhere, a hose runs across a frozen surface as someone builds another layer of ice, working in the dark to create the kind of place where memories are made. In ICEMAKERS, a new documentary by filmmaker Randy Frykas, we …

Some Good News: Renewable energy meets growth in global demand

May 7, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

For the first time, renewable energy met all the growth in global electricity demand last year. Solar alone covered three-quarters of it, growing so fast it now produces as much power as the entire European Union uses. Wind power made up most of the difference.

Dose of Awe: Three cheers for soil

May 7, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Unless you’re a gardener or a farmer, you might not think much about soil. But it’s actually an incredibly complex layered world built over hundreds or even thousands of years.  At the top is a thin layer of living soil that supports nearly all life on land, including 95% of our food. In just one …
