Unless you’re a gardener or a farmer, you might not think much about soil. But it’s actually an incredibly complex layered world built over hundreds or even thousands of years.
At the top is a thin layer of living soil that supports nearly all life on land, including 95% of our food. In just one gram, there can be up to 10 billion organisms, most of which we haven’t even identified yet.
In fact, more than half of all species on Earth live in this hidden world beneath our feet – including 90% of the world’s fungi, 85% of plants, and more than 50% of bacteria.
