Some Good News: Monarch populations surge

March 26, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

The monarch butterfly population is making a comeback! New data shows the eastern migratory population grew by 64% this year, with butterflies covering 7.24 acres of forest in their winter home in Mexico. At the same time, forest loss in that habitat dropped compared to last year. It’s a good sign that conservation efforts are …

Dose of Awe: A world in a redwood

March 26, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

High up in the branches of redwood trees, whole ecosystems are thriving. Over time, fallen leaves mix with dust and water to form soil, right in the canopy of the redwoods. Ferns, moss, and even full-sized trees can grow there, creating a hidden world above the forest floor. Some creatures spend their entire lives in …

Some Good News: Climate pollution falls 2.4% in the United Kingdom

March 19, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

The United Kingdom’s climate pollution fell 2.4% in 2025, reaching their lowest level in more than 150 years. Coal use dropped to levels last seen in the 1600s, and gas use hit a 34-year low. Record wind and solar power and nearly 700,000 new electric vehicles helped drive the change.

Dose of Awe: Sharks are older than trees

March 19, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

There might be more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way, but did you also know that sharks have existed longer than trees have? It’s true! Sharks have been swimming in Earth’s oceans for about 450 million years, around 100 million years before the first trees appeared on land.

Dose of Awe: More trees than stars

March 12, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Did you know there are more trees on Earth than there are stars in the Milky Way? Scientists estimate there are about three trillion (with a ‘t’!) trees on our planet, compared with roughly 100–400 billion stars in our galaxy.

Some Good News: India’s solar leadership

March 5, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

India installed a record 37.9 GW of solar power in 2025, its biggest annual expansion ever, putting the country just behind China and the United States for total solar capacity.  Rooftop solar is surging thanks to a national program bringing panels to millions of homes. The momentum is continuing, with another 42.5 GW of solar …

Dose of Awe: Monarch butterfly migration

March 5, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies begin one of nature’s most remarkable journeys, travelling more than 4,000 kilometres from Canada to the mountains of central Mexico.  No single butterfly completes the full cycle. The ones that return north in spring lay eggs as they travel, and their descendants continue the journey over several generations.  Along …

Dose of Awe: Thundersnow is winter’s rarest surprise

February 26, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Have you ever heard of thundersnow? It sounds like the name of a superhero in a Marvel movie, but it’s actually one of winter’s rarest surprises.  It happens when pockets of warm air rise into colder air, creating the energy needed for lightning even in a snowstorm. Snow absorbs sound, so the thunder feels softer …

Some Good News: Chile’s renewables boom

February 26, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

Chile’s power system is becoming cleaner, smarter, and more affordable for households. Chile is building nearly 10 GW of new power capacity by 2027, with a whopping 95% coming from renewable energy and battery storage. Solar and wind are already replacing fossil fuels, while large-scale batteries help manage the grid and lower costs.
