We know blue whales are big – but it’s hard to imagine how big.
The blue whale is the largest animal in Earth’s history, even bigger than all known dinosaurs. They reach lengths of about 110 feet, which is longer than a basketball court, and its heart weighs around 400 pounds. That’s roughly the weight of an upright piano!
With each steady beat it pumps about 60 gallons of blood through the body, and the sound of its heartbeat can carry for kilometres through the ocean.
