Beavers may look small and cute, but they are powerful ecosystem engineers. Their dams turn streams into wetlands that support huge amounts of wildlife, reduce flooding, store water during droughts, and improve water quality.
These wetlands can even slow the spread of wildfires by keeping landscapes moist, making the humble beaver an important ally as fire seasons grow longer and more intense.
