After disappearing in the 1990s, western bluebirds are returning to Vancouver Island thanks to volunteers who brought birds from Washington state and installed nesting boxes to replace lost habitat.
This year marked their best breeding season yet, with 30 adults producing 126 young. There are now 156 bluebirds in the Cowichan Valley, an encouraging sign that years of conservation work are paying off.
