A major UN report shows that global deforestation is on the decline, and Canada is part of this good news.
Between 2015 and 2025, countries have collectively slowed forest loss by nearly 7m hectares (Mha) per year compared to 1990-2000.
In Canada, forests are growing through natural forest expansion, tree planting projects, and turning former farmland into forest.
In China, large tree-planting projects, including the Great Green Wall started in 1978, have increased forest cover from about 10% in 1949 to over 25% today.
Growing forests help fight climate change, protect wildlife, and support communities. While we still need to do more to slow global deforestation, this is good news to take into 2026.
