Dose of Awe: The return of the Chinook salmon

For more than 100 years, four dams blocked Chinook salmon from reaching their spawning grounds in the Klamath River that runs through southern Oregon and Northern California.

When the last dam came down in 2024, the river was finally open again.

Just one year later, more than 51,000 Chinook salmon returned, nearly double the number that scientists had forecast. Before long, they were back in streams they hadn’t reached for generations.

Nature can recover in incredible when it’s given the chance.
