Dose of Awe:  How the discovery of one rare bird helped protect land that’s now home to one in eight of the world’s bird species

In 1997, scientists in Ecuador came across a bird that was new to science, now known as jocotoco antpitta. The effort to protect its forest home grew into 19 nature reserves that are now home to more than 1,350 bird species, or one in eight of all bird species on Earth.
