Dose of Awe: Elephants can shape landscapes long after they die

October 29, 2026 by Bailey Dunyo

The mighty Elephant helps shape its surroundings by spreading seeds, clearing vegetation, and digging wells. But new research from South Africa shows their impact continues long after they die.

As their bodies break down, nutrients seep into the soil. At first, it’s too much for plants to handle. But over time, rich grasses grow attracting zebras, buffalo, and rhinos to graze.

Researchers found these changes can last at least eight years after the elephant has passed.
